How often should you groom your dog, cat or bird?
There's no single answer to how often a pet should be groomed — it depends on species, breed, coat type and lifestyle. But a few general guidelines will keep most companions looking and feeling great.
Dogs with long or curly coats (poodles, doodles, shih tzus) benefit from a full groom every 4–6 weeks to prevent matting. Short-haired breeds can usually go 8–12 weeks, with brushing in between. Double-coated breeds need regular de-shedding, especially in warmer months.
Cats are natural self-groomers, but long-haired cats still need help to avoid mats and hairballs — a professional groom every 6–8 weeks works well. Short-haired cats benefit from occasional de-shedding and nail care.
Birds need lighter but regular attention: periodic wing, nail and beak care keeps them comfortable and safe. Frequency varies by species, so ask your groomer for advice specific to your bird.
